With so many people sharing music in so many ways nowadays, it is really tough to assume that cds might just possibly be on their own way out? After all, they have been our medium of choice for music for years now. They stood heads and shoulders above cassette tapes, marking the point in the road of progress where digital information overtook magnetic tape. Walkmans soon turned from cassette players to cd players. People started buying cds instead of cassettes. And before you knew it, cds were a thing of the past.
Well, this change was easy to see, but today it is different. What exactly is taking the place of cds nowadays? After all, cds are what you buy music on when you go to the music store. Bands still release cds. You download music and burn it to a cd from your computer, so why would anyone think that cds are on the downturn? Well, there are a few indications.
First of all, MP3 players are really taking strides to overcome the cds of yesterday. Just think about it. They fit in your pocket easier than a cd. They recharge quickly and cost little more than a good cd walkman, but at the same time they are capable of holding a ton more music than a conventional cd. You can put them in your car, in a stereo, or you can plug headphones into them and listen to them on the go. They do not skip, they do not get scratched, and they do not wear out (unless, of course, you drop them into the water!).
Computers themselves are also replacing cds as a music medium. Many people own a computer, burn songs onto it off of the internet, and simply use it as a boom box. They crank their tunes digitally through their computer, never bothering to burn them to cd. If they need to go portable, they use their Ipod or MP3 player.
