When Asus unveiled the ASUS Eee PC in 2007, the term “netbook” came into generic use. The purchase of the netbook is increasing year after year. In 2007, 400,000 netbooks were sold which had been increased by thirty times in 2008. In 2009, the sales are expected to jump over 35 million and it is estimated that the sales will reach 139 million in 2013. The rise in the sales is due to the rise in web based applications and as said by the Wired Magazine netbooks are becoming the “super portable laptops for professionals”.

Hardware- the netbook users totally rely on the internet that’s why they do not need the powerful hardware as used in the local computers. In some of the netbooks the conventional hard disk drive or optical disc drives are not used whereas the solid state storage device is used which require less power, robust and durable and are also smaller and lighter. In case of your
hard drive destruction make sure to use secure disposal!

Application software is generally downloaded from internet or read from USB on the machines with no optical disc drive. The netbooks now-a-days available in the market support WI-FI wireless networking and can be used on mobile telephone networks with data capability.

Processor Architecture

ARM- the high performance chips that require low power envelope are designed and licensed by ARM. These chips constitute an ideal basis for the netbooks. ARM has touted these as an alternative platform. Rather Arm has had very little success in establishing a market for their netbook chips.

Google has announced that they will launch the new Google chrome OS, a netbook OS by the end of 2010 which will support both x86 and the ARM architecture. Freescale, a manufacturer of ARM chips projected that half of the total netbooks will be run on ARM by 2012.

MIPS- It has been seen that in some of the Ultra-low cost netbooks features MIPS CPU. For higher end applications, 64 bit Loongson MIPS microprocessor is used.

X86- HP and Samsung features the x86 compatible VIA Technology C7 Processor. VIA has also designed the Nano, a x86-64 compatible architecture.

Software

Windows - It is estimated that over 90% of the netbooks has shipped with Windows XP, as of January 2009. And later it is estimated that it is sold ranging from US$15 to US$35 by Microsoft. Microsoft has extended the availability of Windows XP for ultra low cost personal computer from June 2008 to June 2010 so that the netbooks can gain the market share over the desktops and the Value laptops and to prevent increased installation of Linux on notebooks. For this class of devices Microsoft has also tested and demonstrated for the starter edition of the Windows 7. Windows CE has also been used in the netbooks due to its features that are reduced.

Linux - it has been seen that Linux is shipped on approximately less than 10% of netbooks and it is the second most operating system after Microsoft. Linux do not need an optical disc drive to install software as Linux systems install it directly from software respiratory on web.
